Nightstand Size and Height Guide: Find the Right Fit for Your Bed
Choosing modern nightstands starts with checking how they fit beside your bed. A surface that sits too high can make everyday items awkward to reach, while a cabinet that extends too far forward can leave little room to get out of bed. This nightstand size guide helps you match the height to your mattress and choose a width and depth that suit your space. The table below shows what to measure before you buy.
| Measurement | What it affects | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Height | Reaching items from bed | Floor-to-mattress height, including your topper |
| Width | Space occupied along the bed wall | Available room on each side of the bed frame |
| Depth | How far the cabinet projects into the room | Surface space for your belongings and room to get out of bed |
| Bedside gap | Access across the space beside the mattress | Frame overhang, bedding and your comfortable reach |
Standard nightstand dimensions help narrow your search, but your mattress and room layout determine the fit. A queen bed with a thick mattress may need a taller bedside table than a king on a low base. Measure your assembled bed before choosing a nightstand, especially if you’re replacing the mattress too.
How Tall Should a Nightstand Be Compared to Your Mattress?
Start with a nightstand top close to the top of your mattress. This is a useful reference point for reaching a phone or setting down a glass. Measure vertically from the floor to the sleeping surface, including any mattress topper. Keep loose bedding out of the measurement. Advice on whether to go slightly higher or lower varies, so treat mattress level as a starting point. Southern Living’s nightstand height guide recommends level or slightly lower.

If your mattress top is 25 inches (63.5 cm) from the floor, begin by comparing nightstands around that height. Then check the reach while lying in your usual position. Can you pick something up without lifting your shoulder awkwardly or leaning over the edge?
A slightly taller or shorter table may suit you, but there’s no single height difference that works for everyone. A low platform bed doesn’t automatically need a short nightstand, either: a thick mattress can change the final height considerably.
For an adjustable bed, test access with the base flat and in the raised position you use most often.
Standard Nightstand Dimensions: Height, Width and Depth
Common shopping ranges are approximately 23 to 28 inches (58 to 71 cm) high, 21 to 28 inches (53 to 71 cm) wide, and 16 to 20 inches (41 to 51 cm) deep. Wayfair Canada’s dimensions guide uses these ranges, though individual designs fall outside them. They describe a portion of the market, not a required bedroom standard.
Read each product’s labelled measurements carefully. A listing written as W × D × H gives width first, depth second and height last. Other retailers may use a different order. Check assembled dimensions rather than shipping-box measurements, and confirm whether handles or projecting tops are included.
The cabinet’s outside dimensions also won’t tell you how much fits inside. Drawer sides, runners and the back panel reduce usable storage space. Look for internal drawer measurements if you need to store a tablet, book or another specific item.
Save the dimensions of two or three suitable options. Comparing those numbers side by side makes it easier to spot a cabinet that’s unexpectedly deep or narrow in otherwise similar product photos.
Choosing Nightstand Width for Twin, Queen and King Beds
Bed size gives you a starting point for width. A narrow nightstand can suit a twin, while a queen or king may have room for a wider cabinet. As a rough shopping reference, Wayfair groups widths below 21 inches (53 cm) as narrow, 21 to 28 inches (53 to 71 cm) as standard, and above 29 inches (74 cm) as wide. Its bed-size recommendations associate these groups with twin, full or queen, and king beds respectively.
Available wall space can override those proportions. To choose a nightstand width for a queen bed, measure each side separately. Include the full frame width, especially with upholstered sides that extend beyond the mattress.
For example, if there’s 27 inches between the frame and a wall, a 27-inch cabinet leaves no bedside gap. A smaller option gives you room to adjust its position.
Likewise, the right nightstand size for a king bed may be narrow in a compact bedroom. Different widths on opposite sides can also work when a doorway limits one side. Choose each piece around the space it actually occupies.
How Deep Should Your Nightstand Be?
Choose depth by checking both the tabletop and the space in front of it. Lay out the items you keep beside you on a sheet of paper, then mark a rectangle around them. Include your lamp base and check whether its shade would hit the wall. Leave enough room to put down a glass without balancing it at the edge.
Next, mark the proposed cabinet depth on the floor with painter’s tape. Allow for any space behind it needed by a plug, cable or projecting skirting board. The front edge may sit farther into the room than the product depth alone suggests.Sit on the bed and put your feet down. If the taped corner occupies that space, try a shallower cabinet or adjust its position.

For drawer models, ask how far the drawer extends when fully open. Check that you can stand or sit where you’ll use it. A cabinet may fit neatly when closed yet leave too little room for your knees once the drawer is pulled out.
How Much Space Should You Leave Between the Bed and Nightstand?
Try a gap of about 3 inches (7.6 cm) between the bed frame and the nightstand as an initial layout. Wayfair suggests 3 to 6 inches (7.6 to 15.2 cm), but that is a placement guideline, not a fixed requirement. Adjust within your room after checking access. Measure from the outer edge of the frame. If the frame extends past the mattress, your hand has to reach across that overhang as well as the gap. A placement that looks close from the foot of the bed may feel surprisingly far away from your pillow.
Make the bed with your usual duvet before deciding. Check that hanging bedding doesn’t catch on drawer handles or bunch tightly against the cabinet. You should also be able to tuck in sheets without moving heavy furniture every time.
Finally, check nearby wardrobe and room doors through their full swing. If a door hits the nightstand, reconsider its position or dimensions before ordering. Keeping the bedside reachable shouldn’t prevent you from using the rest of the room.
Before You Choose
Before ordering a nightstand, measure from the floor to the top of your mattress and check the available space beside the bed frame. Use those measurements to narrow your options, then mark the cabinet’s footprint on the floor. Check that you can reach the surface comfortably and open its drawers without blocking nearby doors. If you’re choosing between two sizes, let those everyday movements guide your decision. A wider tabletop is only useful if it leaves enough room to move beside the bed.
